Space experts have warned that the increasing number of satellites and space debris in low Earth orbit raises the possibility of collisions that could lead to the destruction of satellites and the spreading of more debris, in a scenario that could make parts of this orbit unusable. The orbit currently includes more than 34,000 satellites and pieces of debris, including more than 10,000 objects linked to the Starlink network of SpaceX, which played a leading role in increasing congestion by launching satellites at record rates, making it possess the largest satellite fleet in history. Starlink satellites are increasingly conducting maneuvers to avoid collisions, as data indicated that the satellites carried out hundreds of thousands of emergency maneuvers during the past year alone, with the highest rates recorded in recent months, in an indication of the increasing danger of congestion in orbit. It is estimated that more than 41,000 additional satellites could be launched by 2034, about two-thirds of which will come from SpaceX, Amazon, and Chinese companies, and plans to develop orbital data centers may raise the total number to about 1.5 million satellites, which increases the complexity of managing the movement of satellites in orbit.
